Prize Giving Dinner

Over one hundred members of WSC and their guests celebrated the clubÄôs annual prize giving with a dinner and dance held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.Commodore Steve Dadd welcomed the mayor, Councillor Gill Taylor and her partner.After a hearty meal, trophies were awarded to winners of the seasonÄôs races, plus those that had ventured beyond the serene waters of Weymouth Bay.Leading in the cruiser fleet was Richard Woof in his seemingly all-conquering J-Class ÄòJo 90Äô, who took home seven pieces of silverware. In the National Squib fleet Ian Jones helmed ÄòAldebaranÄô with a variety of crew to bring home six trophies. Prizes were well spread among the dinghy fleet with Phil & Ali Ashworth, Celia Rushton and Phil Norris all taking home three cups.Farther abroad, former Commodore Kathy Claydon came second overall double-handing in the Yachting Monthly Triangle Race from Torquay to Treguier in France via Kinsale. Simon and Jill Vines cruised 1200 miles along the coast of Sweden to within 40 miles of the Arctic Circle and Mark and Rima Bugler reached La Rochelle in their yacht ÄòSaskiaÄôThe evening finished with dancing to a jazz funk trio.Although celebrating the previous year's sailing, the annual dinner signals the start of the new season, with class dinners, talks and boat lift-ins not far around the corner. The first race of the season is the Spring Series on Sunday 14th April.
