More Than Just a Friday Evening
What does the Youth & Cadet programme at Weymouth Sailing Club actually achieve?
Its a question worth asking — because what happens on a Friday evening is only part of the story.
Our programme is creating opportunities for young people to develop confidence, take responsibility, challenge themselves and build skills that extend well beyond sailing.
Weve seen some fantastic examples of this recently.
Congratulations to Poppy and Leo, who both achieved top marks in the sailing element of their GCSE PE assessment, having selected sailing as one of their chosen sports. Its fantastic recognition of the skill, commitment and ability they have developed through their time on the water.
It was equally brilliant to see all our 2026 GCSE-age sailors back at the club following their exams, using sailing as a way to relax, reconnect with friends and enjoy being on the water. And with some very impressive GCSE results across the group, a huge well done to every one of them!
Then theres Elise, who is taking her next step with a UKSA Cadetship, exploring a future career in the superyacht industry. We wish her every success as she starts this exciting new chapter.
These are the outcomes that really matter.
Our young people arent simply learning to sail. They are learning to lead, volunteer, coach, compete, solve problems, support each other and take ownership. Some are progressing into qualifications and coaching roles; others are discovering pathways into education and careers.
And importantly, these opportunities are being created by club members, for club members.
Every session delivered, every safety boat crewed, every young sailor encouraged and every opportunity created contributes to something much bigger — a club environment where young people can belong, grow and discover what they are capable of.
Thats the impact of our Youth & Cadet programme at Weymouth Sailing Club.
And its happening far beyond Friday evening.
