Youth On Boats

Youth On Boats, or YOBs, meet every second Friday at the Club from April to October. Over the Summer holidays we meet every Friday. YOBs starts at 5.30pm and water activities finish around 7.40pm followed by a BBQ on the decking.

The group is open for young sailors aged 9 to 18 years old. We are lucky to have regular adult helpers who teach us how to rig our boats, how to be safe at sea and give us the chance to learn to sail or to improve the skills we already have.  Sailing courses and racing marks are set up for us around Weymouth Bay, supervised by the WSC Safety Boat. We have a fleet of boats to use Fevas, Wayfarers and Opis. We are provided with buoyancy aids and wetsuits. For those who like to buy their own kit we run a second hand stall. The only kit you need to bring is your swim kit and dinghy shoes - old trainers are fine. You MUST be able to swim 25m unaided to join us.

We get the chance to sail member's boats (under supervision) on the hugely popular Cruiser Night and Squib Night. For some of us this gives us an introduction to becoming crew for the yachts. This year our older YOBs have been out competing against the Cruiser class in the Summer series.

Over the Winter months we still meet once monthly; this year we had trips out to Coast Watch, Portland Port and Osprey Pool Assault Course. We've organised a bowling afternoon for February and have other events planned such as Theory Nights, Bingo and our Prize giving party. Our AGM is held in October where we listen to everyone's ideas and plan for the next season.

The YOBs helpers are led by the ever enthusiastic Steve Staple who plans the activities depending on the weather. A YOBs Captain is elected by the YOBs to listen to the views of all and lead our activities.

We are always keen to welcome new recruits both as YOBs or as helpers. If you want more info please email Steve on yobs@wsc.org.uk
