Cruising Trophies Awarded at Cruising Talks Evening

Published 13:31 on 14 Apr 2026

The recent annual Cruising Talks and Social Evening saw the 2 cruising trophies awarded to the 2025 winners. The Passage Cup, awarded for duration (measured by a combination of distance sailed, days away and ports visited), was presented for the 2nd year running to Dave Knight on The Wizard for his extensive trip to the Baie de Quiberon in southern Brittany. The Wizard sailed nearly 1000 miles over 46 days taking in 16 different ports or anchorages.

The Meech Barometer, awarded for special endeavour or achievement was presented to Doug Brown on JuCat for his maiden channel crossing to Cherbourg. A voyage that always instills trepidation and anxiety, especially when you do it in a vessel just under 23' in length, however Doug and his crew took it in their typical casual stride!

The evening which was attended by around 30 members and guests heralds the arrival of the new cruising season and hopefully inspired people to get out and sail to new horizons. Ray Capp, our retiring Cruising Coordinator after more than 6 seasons in the role, introduced his replacement Bill Barna (Merlot) and assistant Gaz Evans (Rum Runner). A variety of interesting, informative and often humerous talks were given by members, namely Dave Knight - Bay of Quiberon cruise, Simon Kershaw - the RNLI in Weymouth, Doug Brown - Maiden Channel Crossing and Gaz Evans - DSC Radio calls using MMSI. Thanks to all speakers and attendees for making it such an enjoyable and successful evening.
