Weymouth Yacht Regatta 2024
The weather gods smiled, so that the event, kindly sponsored by PD Decorating South West, G J Owens Electrical Contractors. and Poundbury Wealth Management, took place in perfect conditions in Weymouth Bay. Peter Bell from Castle Cove did a splendid job as Race Officer, ably assisted by his team, directing the racing from Weymouth Sailing club's committee boat Viking, while Castle Cove also provided their new RIB Merlin and crew a great collaboration between the two clubs.
Four races were sailed in a light southwesterly breeze which picked up a bit in the afternoon on both days. Three all-in starts made for a busy first upwind leg each time, followed by the sight of spinnakers blossoming across the bay.
The Pursuit race was enjoyed by all as a result of clever course design; Samurai led most of the way but got lost and was overtaken by John Pym helming Nancy. The fact that two modern fast boats finished within seconds of these two Sonatas, both over forty years old (not to mention the crew!) shows that the new YTC handicap was working quite well.
A great event a big thank-you to Amanda for her excellent catering throughout the weekend, and to event organiser Andy Gaunt for his sterling work.
Roll on next year, when we hope to see even more boats on the water!
