Four Times Round the World - at the Cruiser Class Dinner!
Published 13:17 on 4 Mar 2013
Special guests Keith Sullivan and Arthur Meech together with WSC veteran cruiser Jeremy Parkinson reckon they have sailed at least 100,000 miles during their careers - the equivalent, I am informed, of 4 circumnavigations of the globe, or rather more than one each! How many of us will ever be able to say that about our own boats? How many miles do you aim to have sailed by the end of this year? The Centenary Cruiser Class Dinner began with a message of congratulation from the President and Committee of Cherbourg Yacht Club, with whom we are sharing this special sailing year; then we sat back to enjoy an excellent meal from the new Galley team, after which Keith and Arthur regaled us with stories of sailing at the club in the 60s and 70s and of exploits offshore Äì including the truth behind the strange behaviour of the customs man at lÄôAber WracÄôh! And now the challenge begins; with that impressive mileage as benchmark, Cruiser class sailors soon begin a year in which we could all aim to sail more, and further; even if we never get to the edge of the world, there is a lot more sea to explore than is visible from the clubroom windows - all you have to do is cast off and go.. If you need advice or help with your sailing plans this year, we can provide you with the support you need to get you across the Channel to Cherbourg with us in June Äì you only have to ask. Class captains and members are prepared to do on the water practice in your boat or theirs, and to lead planning sessions ashore for cruising.
